Enjoy an orientation tour of Houston this morning before visiting the official NASA facilities at the Johnson Space Centre, home of the astronauts and many space artefacts. Here it is possible to see a real spacecraft, touch a piece of moon rock, walk though the Skylab space station in the Starship Gallery or see a space shuttle mock-up. Depart for Lafayette. On arrival there is the opportunity to take an optional boat ride on the Atchafalaya bayou. A typical Cajun dinner is included this evening with regional specialties and a hoedown in a leisurely setting. After several steps on the dance floor, you will “let the good times roll”. Day 3 - Lafayette to New Orleans

Morning city tour including the cathedral and the Evangeline Oak, immortalized by the poet, Longfellow. Depart for Saint Martinville, nicknamed “Little Paris” in the 19th century, a rare example of a very European village configuration where you will be told the story of the Evangeline. Continue to Avery Island and tour a Tabasco plant followed by a visit to the exotic Jungle Gardens as well as Bird City on this island near the Gulf of Mexico. Drive through Morgan City, the world’s shrimp capital. This afternoon drive through the Terrebonne swamps. Take an included boat trip in the legendary Louisiana bayous and see the resident ‘gators. Then onwards to Thibodaux where the countryside shifts to prairies and fields of sugar cane. Continue to New Orleans and overnight.

Day 4 - New Orleans

Start off the day with a walking tour and enjoy a stroll in the Vieux Carré part of town where you’ll see the French Market, Saint Louis Cathedral and the Cabildo, a remarkable Spanish building dating from the 18th century. Afternoon guided tour of New Orleans including the French Quarter and market as well as the tranquil Garden District where you can take the “Streetcar named Desire” and see a well-preserved collection of historic southern mansions. Overnight New Orleans.

Day 5 - New Orleans to Baton Rouge

This morning visit Oak Alley and Nottoway plantations, which both give you an excellent idea of the opulence of the region prior to the Civil War. Oak Alley certainly makes a superb first impression – you arrive at the mansion through a canopy of giant oak trees over two hundred years old. Continue to Nottoway, a large, admirable estate with many innovations for the mid 19th century. Your journey continues to Baton Rouge, capital of the state of Louisiana. Overnight Baton Rouge.

Day 6 - Baton Rouge to Jackson

This morning enjoy a city tour and discover the Capital, Louisiana State University and the Rural Life Museum. This outdoor museum houses collections of furnishings, utensils, tools and farming implements used in pre-industrial Louisiana as well as a typical 19th century working plantation. Continue to Saint Francisville for a visit of the magnificent Rosedown plantation with gardens inspired by those of Versailles. This afternoon drive to Natchez in the neighbouring state of Mississippi, an attractive Southern city with historical character. The homes in the central part of the city are very well kept and have retained their 19th century charm. Overnight Jackson.

Day 7 - Jackson to Memphis

A visit to Vicksburg National Military Park today; the park was established by Congress in 1899 to commemorate one of the most decisive battles of the American Civil War. It includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles of reconstructed trenches and earthworks, a 16 mile tour road, an antebellum home, 144 emplaced cannons, the restored Union gunboat USS Cairo and the Vicksburg National Cemetery. Continue to Memphis, the home of the blues as well as rock ‘n’ roll, where the greats from B.B. King to Elvis Presley made their first recordings. Afternoon visit of Graceland, the last home of the “King,” turned into a museum after his death. Overnight Memphis.
