Make your USA holiday one to remember and join in the nationwide freedom party on the 4th of July 2016!
Marking the country’s declaration of independence from Britain in 1776, this national holiday is a day to spend celebrating the best of life in the States with loved ones. If you’re on holiday in America on this date, there’ll certainly be plenty of events to help get you in the spirit and celebrate the 4th of July.
As Mickey of the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce tells us ahead of the big day:
“240 years later we Americans still celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, with fireworks symbolic of what is known in the USA as the War of Independence or Revolutionary War. It is an official national and state government holiday, with public institutions and most private businesses closed, which makes it a perfect family holiday festival. Typical in many communities is a parade, festival or fair and fireworks at night.”
From picnics to concerts and fireworks displays of course, we take a look at 2016’s top events and where you can enjoy Independence Day this July.
The Grand Old 4th of July on Bainbridge Island in Washington State
Bainbridge Island in Washington State has a Grand Old 4th of July event planned for 2016. Organised by the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce and many local volunteers, the community celebration kicks off with a 5k foot race and a pancake breakfast that feeds and refuels several hundreds of racers and guests on Independence Day.
With everyone recharged and ready to start the party, the town’s street fair features over 100 arts and crafts stalls and is the perfect place to browse during the quieter moments in the day’s line-up. Grab lunch from one of the food vendors on site and check out the classic car show before enjoying the live music – both patriotic and popular tunes will be played throughout to get the crowds moving!
Keep the little ones entertained with the games and entertainment on offer, while you enjoy a State-side brew in the beer and wine garden before the big parade starts, showcasing colourful characters in America’s culture and bringing the community together. You won’t want to miss the grand finale at the end of the day, as a professional team light up the skies with the harbour fireworks display.
“People visiting the USA are absolutely welcome to join the party,” Says Mickey. “Those from Britain might want to be prepared for a little good-natured teasing, however!”
Seafair Summer Fourth in Seattle, Washington
Elsewhere in Washington State, Seattle is not only celebrating the 4th of July but also the city’s annual Seafair – a ten week summer festival from mid-June to August.
Seafair’s Independence Day event is something special, however. “We host the ultimate freedom celebration at Gas Works Park, which boasts the best views of the fireworks show over Lake Union,” says organiser Emily.
“Throughout the day, guests can dine with our food vendors, peruse exhibit booths and listen to live entertainment from the main stage. For those 21 and over, you can quench your summer thirst in our beer and beverage gardens while relaxing in the cool breeze. Everyone is invited to participate in all-American games, including Hula-Hoop Contests, Pie Eating Contests, Sack Races and more! Finish the festivities with an awe-inspiring fireworks show to celebrate the USA.”
Gas Works Park is located on the north shore of Lake Union in Seattle and general admission to the 4th of July event is free, so it’s definitely worth checking out this celebration if you’re staying in the area.
Fourth of July Celebration at The pier in San Francisco, California
If you’re travelling around California, San Francisco’s Pier 39 is the place to be this Independence Day!
According to San Francisco Travel, “dazzling fireworks, local bands, food and arts and crafts ignite this annual waterfront party”. The 4th of July Celebration at the Pier in the city’s North Beach area is a tradition in San Francisco and with enough entertainment to make a day of it, guests should bring an extra layer in case it gets chilly during the evening concert – which this year features popular cover band Tainted Love performing some of the best hits from the 80s.
The main fireworks spectacle starts at 9.30 pm, adding sparkle to the event and giving a bright red, white and blue glow to the city’s skyline – the perfect way to celebrate the 4th of July in 2016!
Let Freedom Sing! July 4th in Music City in Nashville, Tennessee
Surely there’s no better place to rock out on Independence Day than in the home of music in America? Well that’s what the good people at Visit Music City suggest, saying: “Our best advice to celebrate the fourth in style is to celebrate in Nashville!”
The city of Nashville in Tennessee is known the world over for its country music efforts and is home to legendry venues such as The Grand Ole Opry and the RCA recording studios. If you’re a fan of the USA hits, then the city’s ‘Let Freedom Sing! July 4th in Music City’ event is the ideal place to spend America’s birthday.
The event takes place across two venues, the Ascend Amphitheater where the main concert will be held and the Riverfront Park where children can enjoy games and inflatables at the Family Fun Zone from noon until the concert starts at 5pm.
Naturally, the Nashville Independence Day concert brings together top acts from the country, folk and blues genres to perform at this year’s Let Freedom Sing! The likes of Sheryl Crow and Brandy Clark will lead the crowds in celebrating this 4th of July. Returning to the Riverfront Park after the show, prepare to be astounded by one of the USA’s biggest fireworks displays on the day accompanied by a dramatic performance from the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

Macy’s 4th of July fireworks in New York City
Naturally, one of the country’s biggest events for Independence Day takes place in America’s iconic New York City. The now world-famous fireworks show hosted by the mega department store Macy’s is broadcast around the country and for those in New York City, it doesn’t come anymore patriotic than enjoying the dazzling display from a balcony or rooftop bar.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2016, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks are an American institution and not to be missed if you’re visiting NYC over Independence Day. Over the course of this 25 minute show, a whopping 40,000 (and counting) fireworks will be ignited!
For the best views, stake out spots near Brooklyn Bridge on the Promenade or in the park. Alternatively, crowds will line the Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive and bars with an open roof are likely to be popular viewing locations. Bear in mind that bars will become busier as the fireworks begin but they do offer the added bonus of enjoying the show with a drink in hand. Wherever you decide to watch the fireworks from, there’s no other display quite like it in the USA and it’s certainly a great way to celebrate the 4th of July!
