Arrive New York City
Welcome to the ‘Big Apple’ your home for the next three nights. Bursting with some of the world's most iconic attractions including the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park and the buzzy and bright billboards in Times Square, there is so much to experience. Head down to the southern tip of Manhattan and walk over beautiful Brooklyn Bridge, stroll around the diverse neighbourhoods including Greenwich Village or West Village where many US television shows including ‘Friends’ were set.
New York City to Poughkeepsie, Hudson Valley
Board your Amtrak train service at New York Penn Station for the 90-minute journey to ‘New York City’s backyard’ to enjoy a three-night stay admiring the serene countryside and relaxing in the beautiful Hudson Valley. Take a short taxi ride to collect your car and then begin exploring the areas many delights including vineyards and distilleries and the hiking trails in the Catskill Mountains or walking over the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge across the beautiful Hudson River on the ‘Walkway over Hudson’. The area was also where President Franklin D. Roosevelt was born, and his grand home and estate are open for guided tours. A popular spot to visit when in the area is the charming town of Rhinebeck often voted one of America’s ‘most charming small towns’. Stroll around its cute downtown area lined with market stalls and popular coffee shops and Samuel’s Sweet shop owned by the actor Paul Rudd and see the vintage aircraft at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. For an extraordinary dining experience eat in the Culinary Institute of America where many of America's top chefs trained.
Poughkeepsie, Hudson Valley to Riverhead, Long Island, 145 miles
Head to Long Island today, perhaps stopping off to stretch your legs at Fahnestock State Park. Long Island is a long peninsula surrounded by ocean and powder sand beaches, which is renowned for its vineyards, quaint towns, and important historical sights. With over 60 vineyards to choose from many of which are in the North Fork area, you can easily spend a day sipping your way through a multitude of wines, with Merlot a particular favourite. For spectacular Atlantic Ocean views climb to the top of Montauk Point Lighthouse, located at the tip of Long Island. For a look back at a bygone era and a must for fans of the Great Gatsby visit the many mansions, estates and castles on the North Shore. Take a tour of these opulent and sophisticated buildings where Hollywood royalty and socialites lived and played.
Homeward Bound
Rest and relax today perhaps on one of Long Islands picture-perfect beaches such as the beaches at the Hamptons, a popular vacation spot for the rich and famous. Later head back to New York JFK airport to drop off your car and board your flight back to the UK.
