Starting and finishing in the vibrant and foodie city of Portland this fly-drive takes in the windswept and rugged coastline, the snow-capped peak of dramatic Mount Hood, the stunning waterfalls of Columbia River Gorge, the lush wine region of Willamette Valley and the jewel in its crown Crater Lake National Park, home to the most spectacular lake landscapes in the world and the USA’s deepest lake.

Arrival Portland
Fly directly to Portland, Oregon’s largest city lovingly called the ‘City of Roses’ which has majestic Mount Hood as its stunning backdrop. A vibrant and hip city, Portland has a laid-back vibe, with over 200 parks and gardens, interesting neighbourhoods some of which have a bohemian vibe. Make sure to experience its award-winning restaurants, colourful markets and taste the city’s delicious wine and craft beer. Visit the historic Pittock Mansion, the former home of Henry Pittock, a London born publisher and take in the incredible Portland skyline. Other attractions to explore are the pretty Portland Japanese Garden and the nearby Portland Rose Garden. During your stay we’ve included a half day trip to the jaw-dropping beauty of the Columbia River Gorge, a glacially carved 70-mile canyon home to lush forests, dramatic cliffs and stunning waterfalls including the 620-foot Multnomah Falls and the equally beautiful Latourell Falls.

Portland to Astoria, 98 miles
Pick up your car this morning and head to the coast to the city of Astoria – known as the ‘The Little San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest’. Set along the mighty Columbia River, stroll along the Astoria Riverwalk, and climb to the top of Astoria Column to enjoy panoramic views. The 80’s film and television series ‘The Goonies’ was mostly filmed in Astoria, and you can visit the house and neighbourhoods that shot some of the film’s famous scenes.

Astoria to Newport, 133 miles
Head south on famous Highway 101, known as the Pacific Coast Highway driving along the spectacular and rugged Oregon coast stopping for lunch at the artistic and sophisticated town of Cannon Beach. Get a grab and go lunch and take the short drive to nearby beautiful Ecola State Park and take in the memorable views of Haystack Rock, one of the most iconic images of Oregon whilst enjoying a picnic lunch. Carry on south visiting Depoe Bay to see grey whales right from the beach and just before the seaside town of Newport climb to the top of Yaquina Lighthouse, Oregon’s only wooden lighthouse, before settling into your hotel in Newport. Take a stroll on Newport’s wide sandy beach, visit the busy dock area and its authentic taverns, seafood restaurants and noisy sea lion population and see otters, seal and octopus at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Newport to Florence, 49 miles
Your journey continues along Highway 101 to Sea Lion Caves where sea lions and their cubs take shelter every year. The quaint waterfront town of Florence boasts several blocks of art galleries, gift shops and seafood eateries. Either today or the following day enroute to Grants Pass be sure to visit Heceta Head Lighthouse, a 56-foot-tall, late-19th-century beacon that shines the brightest beam of any lighthouse in the state. Don’t miss a thrilling buggy ride amongst the sand dunes at Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area, where buggy’s climb to the top of the sand dunes and along the golden sand beach.

Florence to Grants Pass, 163 miles
Head east driving along parts of the Umpqua River Scenic Byway between Reedsport and Sutherlin passing quaint towns, fur trading posts and wine country to the classic river town of Grants Pass. This is the starting point for adrenaline-producing white-water rafting and jet-boat trips along the Rogue River, a nationally designated Wild and Scenic River that flows through some of Southern Oregon’s most dramatic scenery.

Grants Pass to Bend, 240 miles
Be prepared to be wowed as you visit the dramatic beauty of Crater Lake National Park one of the most spectacular lake landscapes in the world and the USA’s deepest lake. On the way stop at the historic Gold Rush town of Jacksonville, named as one of America’s coolest small towns. On arrival in Crater Lake National Park witness the crystal clear, sapphire-blue lake formed inside the caldera of Mt. Mazama and take the 33-mile drive around the rim where you’ll encounter numerous scenic viewpoints that offer incredible photo opportunities. Finish your day in the beautiful city of Bend, one of the most popular places to live in the state, home to a fabulous choice of restaurants, breweries, great nightlife and a whole host of outdoor pursuits from mountain biking, hiking, fishing and river rafting.

Bend to Salem, 132 miles
In the morning, depart Bend for the Willamette Valley, via Smith Rock State Park, a true geological gem, which boasts sheer cliffs that have risen from the Crooked River Canyon which have created massive red rock walls. Continue to pretty Willamette Valley, Oregon’s main wine producing area home to more than 700 wineries which are well known for their production of pinot noir, pinot gris and chardonnay. You’ll find a bounty of first-rate restaurants as well as winery tasting rooms in the towns of McMinnville and Newberg.

Homeward Bound
Depart for Portland Airport perhaps indulging in some last-minute shopping at the Woodburn Premium Outlets to take advantage of Oregon’s tax-free shopping. Continue to the airport to board your direct flight back to the UK.
