Best time to visit Wyoming
The "best" time to visit Wyoming largely depends on your interests and what you want to experience.
Summer (June - August) is peak season with the best weather for outdoor activities. Warm temperatures, longer days, and generally clear skies make it ideal for hiking, backpacking, camping, kayaking, whitewater rafting, and exploring national parks like Yellowstone and Grand Teton. However this is the busiest time, especially in popular national parks, leading to crowded trails, longer lines, and higher accommodation prices.
The shoulder seasons of Spring & Autumn (May & September - Early October) offer a great balance with fewer crowds and more serene trails and attractions compared to peak summer. There are excellent opportunities to see wildlife as they become more active in milder temperatures and outside the peak tourist rush. Spring brings baby animals and budding wildflowers, and autumn boasts stunning foliage and unique animal behaviours such as elk rutting in September. Temperatures are generally pleasant, though they can be unpredictable, especially in spring.
Winter (November - April) is great for winter sports, ideal for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, and downhill skiing/snowboarding at resorts like Jackson Hole. The landscape is transformed into a peaceful, snow-covered wonderland and many animals, like bison and elk, are easier to spot against the snow. Plus there are the natural hot springs, a perfect way to warm up after outdoor activities. It's important to note that the weather is unpredictable, winter storms can be sudden and severe.
