Sedona to Grand Canyon, 123 miles
Today head to the awe-inspiring sight of the Grand Canyon, first making a stop in the Route 66 town of Williams to see it’s colourful Route 66 gas stations and murals and to make a stop at the Grand Canyon Railway to hopefully see the historic steam locomotive that travels to and from the Grand Canyon. Stay two nights in the town of Tusayan close to the South entrance of the park and when in the park, take the free shuttle buses that travel to the various lookout points that overlook the canyon and the Colorado River. For a memorable experience see the red, gold and yellow hues of the canyon at sunrise.

Grand Canyon to Monument Valley, 179 miles
The incomparable beauty of Monument Valley awaits today, its distinctive backdrop has been the filming location for iconic movies such as Forrest Gump and Back to the Future III. Break up your journey along the way at the historic Cameron Trading Post, which was a significant hub for the Native American population in the 1900’s. Learn about the rich history and traditions of the Navajo nations in its galleries filled with arts and crafts, handmade jewellery and local cuisine. Monument Valley to Mesa Verde National Park, 165 miles
Back track slightly today driving through northern Arizona, to Four Corners Monument, the only place in the USA where four states intersect at one point – the states of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado. Continue your drive into Colorado to the mysterious and unique Mesa Verde National Park where you will stay for the next two nights. Enjoy a day exploring the park and be amazed at its 80 square mile plateau that rises 2,000 feet from the surrounding desert and river valley. Mesa Verde National Park to Montrose, 156 miles
Today we head past the high peaks of the San Juan Mountains, part of the famed Rocky Mountain range to the dramatic spectacle of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park located in the heart of western Colorado. This striking deep canyon sits above the Gunnison River and has high, sheer, black cliffs. For the best views of the canyon drive along the South Rim Road which takes you to several overlooks at the edge of the canyon including Painted Wall View, the tallest cliff in Colorado. Next follow the Colorado River to Rifle Falls State Park, home to the only triple waterfall in Colorado before overnighting in the historic town of Glenwood Springs famous for its hot springs and abundance of outdoor pursuits.

Glenwood Springs to Rocky Mountain National Park (Estes Park), 260 miles
You have a choice of two routes to take you to Rocky Mountain National Park – one of the most scenic is via the exclusive ski resort of Aspen and Independent Pass which is not for the faint hearted due to its high elevation and nail-biting hairpin turns. Then take the Trail Ridge Road, America’s highest paved road into the park and be amazed at its evergreen forests, wildflowers, dramatic hairpin turns and eleven miles of highway that travels above tree level. The park has an abundance of wildlife where you can spot elk, moose and bighorn sheep, and there are hiking trails to suit every ability.
