Arrive in Austin
Start your Texas adventure as soon as you’ve checked in at your hotel. The State Capital is home to the Texas State Museum and State Capital Building, as well as over 250 music venues. Sample the delights of the food trucks or enjoy a breakfast taco. For the history buffs, there is the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum. Within Zilker Park's 358 acres you will find one of the crown jewels of Austin, Barton Springs Pool - a 1,000ft long pool filled from natural spring water situated in beautiful parkland.
Austin to Fredericksburg, 80 miles
After collecting your car downtown and embarking on your journey, you will visit Fredericksburg, which is known for its wineries. The city's German heritage is visible and on display at the Pioneer Museum. In the nearby town square, Marktplatz, the Vereins Kirche is a replica of a 19th-century German church that once stood in the city. The city also pays homage to WWII at the National Museum of the Pacific War, which includes a recreated combat zone.
Fredericksburg to Big Bend National Park, 395 miles
Big Bend National Park includes the entire Chisos mountain range and a large area of the Chihuahuan Desert. The thirty-mile Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive leads to the Castolon Historic District and Santa Elena Canyon. The drive showcases some of the historic and geological features for which the region is famous, including steep limestone cliffs. One of the many homesteads, the remnants of Sam Nail Ranch now provide shade and habitat for desert wildlife. An active windmill still pumps water and attracts an interesting variety of bird and wildlife.
Big Bend National Park to San Antonio, 396 miles
On arrival in this fabulous city, take a stroll along its famous River Walk, the most visited tourist attraction in the state where you will find a plethora of museums, food outlets and shops. Explore The Alamo, one of the nation’s most famous historic sites. Another must is a visit to the jaw-dropping Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest underground attraction in Texas.
San Antonio to Galveston, 250 miles
From East Beach and Stewart Beach to over 10 miles of Seawall beachfront, Galveston has a spot waiting for you. Take in Moody Gardens, where giant glass pyramids house sharks, monkeys and other animals. Amusement rides and restaurants run along the front of Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier on the south shore. To the west is bird-rich Galveston Island State Park, with its plentiful trails and fishing spots.
Galveston to Houston, 50 miles
After your short drive to Houston, return your rental car and take time to enjoy all this vibrant city has to offer. Discover Sam Houston Heritage Park which is set amidst the skyscrapers of the downtown skyline. Another of Houston’s top attractions is Space Centre Houston which showcases the future and past of America’s human space-flight programme. Whatever takes your fancy, Houston is filled with world-class attractions, activities, dining, shopping and nightlife.
