Your day-to-day plan
Arrive in San Francisco
Upon arrival make your way to your hotel either by BART, uber or taxi and spend the rest of the day exploring the city and enjoying the cuisine for which the city is famous. There is so much to do here. See the sea lions at Pier 39 and discover the many shops and restaurants at Fisherman’s Wharf, take a short boat ride to Alcatraz Island and take the self-guided audio tour, ride the cable cars, see Lombard Street and try one of the delicious Ghirardelli chocolates.
San Francisco to Monterey, 120 miles
After collecting your hire car from downtown San Francisco, you will head down the coast to Monterey on Highway 1 – Pacific Coast Highway for a memorable and scenic drive, passing through the towns of Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. You could walk Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row or visit the Aquarium, before enjoying your evening meal at one of the many restaurants.
Monterey to Pismo Beach, 153 miles
The highlight of today’s drive will be the rugged stretch of coastal road from Carmel to San Simeon through famous Big Sur, the perfect coastal road, surrounded by plunging cliffs and dramatic scenery. With beautiful state parks and breathtaking Bixby Creek Bridge, which spans a 270-foot canyon, the drive provides unforgettable views. At your destination of Pismo Beach, take a stroll through this classic Californian beach town.
Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara, 78 miles
Your drive south continues to historic Santa Barbara. In this city, Spanish influences are evident everywhere, particularly in the architecture of Santa Barbara County Courthouse and Old Mission. With many fine wineries and the Santa Ynez Mountains only a short drive away, why not make a trip to sample some of the wines that are on offer?
Santa Barbara to Los Angeles, 95 miles
Los Angeles has it all, from the Hollywood Sign to Universal Studios, the Beverly Centre to Rodeo Drive. Find your favourite spot to relax along Santa Monica Beach or Venice Beach, or if you’d like to show off your strength, head to the world-famous Muscle Beach. Those who like the glitz and glamour should visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame or a Hollywood Homes Tour, whilst the thrill seekers will love Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia - just a short 45-minute drive to the north of Hollywood.
Los Angeles to Las Vegas, 276 miles
There are several ways to get to Vegas from LA, with the shortest taking you through beautiful rock formations and old west towns. If you’re happy to add another hour or two to your drive time, take in the national parks along the way for an extra special journey. On arrival, it is time to return your rental car before you hit the Las Vegas Strip where the entertainment never stops, from the tables and slots to the elaborate stage shows. You could also take a helicopter flight to the Grand Canyon, visit the imposing Hoover Dam, or enjoy nature’s own spectacular construction at Valley of Fire & Red Rock Canyon state parks.
Homeward Bound
Your vacation is coming to an end, make your way independently to Las Vegas International airport for your homebound flight.
