Arrival Phoenix
Fly into Phoenix and transfer to your hotel for the night, in readiness for your exciting motorhome road trip around America’s Southwest.
Phoenix to Tucson, 111 miles
Pick up your motorhome in Phoenix today and drive south-east to Tucson which is set in the heart of the beautiful Sonoran Desert. Explore the striking landscapes of nearby Saguaro National Park on a hike or bike ride and get close up views of its iconic Saguaro cacti plants and ancient petroglyphs. For airplane enthusiasts the Pima Air and Space Museum houses over 400 military and commercial aircraft from a Wright Flyer to a modern day Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The city’s vibrant downtown is worth exploring and is home to renowned museums, galleries, and a flourishing food scene influenced by Mexican and Indigenous traditions—earning Tucson its UNESCO City of Gastronomy status.
Tucson to Tombstone, 74 miles
Continue your road trip in Arizona to Tombstone and learn about its wild west heritage as one of America’s most iconic frontier towns. This historic town is most famous for the Gunfight at the O.K Corral and today its legendary history is brought to life through daily shootout re-enactments, authentic saloons and interesting museums. There is a choice of campgrounds near downtown or in the surrounding state parks.
Tombstone to Las Cruces, 247 miles
Drive into the unique state of New Mexico today to the town of Las Cruces which has a real authentic Mexican feel and is surrounded by the striking Organ Mountains. A must visit during your stay is to nearby White Sands National Park, a national park like no other where you can see brilliant white sand dunes rise high into the sky. Another worthwhile visit is to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, which lies around a 3-hour drive from Las Cruces and is home to a striking underground world with over 120 caves filled with unique and delicate stalactites and stalagmites. Back in Las Cruces wander through the quaint and charming streets of Mesilla where ‘Billy the Kid’ use to hide out, eat cuisine flavoured by Hatch Green Chilies which the area is famous for or prebook a tour of Spaceport USA, the world’s first ever commercial spaceport located one hour north of Las Cruces.
Las Cruces to Albuquerque, 224 miles
Next up is New Mexico’s largest city Albuquerque travelling via the town of Truth or Consequences perhaps taking a dip in one of the soothing hot springs which the town is famous for. Arrive in your chosen campground for a three-night stay exploring the endless delights of the city including Old Town and its adobe buildings and churches, colourful Route 66 diners, roadside attractions and motels along State Street part of Route 66. Get some mountain air in the Sandia Mountains which has breath-taking views of the Rio Grande Valley. Take a day trip to the charming state capital Santa Fe which can be reached by an hour’s drive or train ride. Oozing charm around every corner in its historic Santa Fe Plaza, iconic adobe architecture and world-class art galleries along Canyon Drive, Santa Fe will leave you enchanted.
Albuquerque to Flagstaff, 325 miles
Drive back in to Arizona today, stopping off for lunch in the Route 66 town of Gallup to see its Indigenous art and heritage at the Gallup Cultural Centre. See an overwhelming display of Route 66 trading posts as you drive to Petrified Forest National Park, the only park in the National Park System containing a section of Historic Route 66. Explore the park where ancient trees turned to stone creating a mesmerising landscape and enjoy outdoor adventures such as hiking and fishing. Continue to Flagstaff and make time to visit nearby Ponderosa Pine Forest, and the national Monuments of Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki. Overnight in your campground in Flagstaff in readiness for an epic two days exploring the Grand Canyon.
Flagstaff to Grand Canyon, 90 miles
Rise early today for the 90-minute drive to the Grand Canyon, a natural wonder that must be seen to be believed. Park your motorhome up and explore the South Rim of the Canyon, on the complimentary national park buses that take you around the park to various breath-taking overlooks, walk part of the Rim Trail or take to the skies on a short helicopter flight for memorable views of the park. Stay for sunrise or sunset for even more unforgettable views.
Grand Canyon to Sedona, 117 miles
Drive to Williams, a classic Route 66 town, perhaps to have breakfast in a Route 66 diner, before driving through red rock country to Sedona. Set amongst amazing rock formations, there are plenty of hiking opportunities in the area, including the Cathedral Rock Trail, a short but steep hike that is rewarded with breath-taking views. Jeep tours can also be prebooked that drive out to the rugged backcountry landscapes.
Homeward Bound
Sadly, your holiday comes to an end today as you head back to Phoenix to drop off your motorhome and then transfer by taxi to the airport to catch your overnight flight back to the UK.
