Arrive in Denver
Fly into the ‘Mile High City’ of Denver and transfer by taxi or jump on the train from the airport to Union Station located in downtown Denver. Walk along bustling 16th Street dining alfresco and souvenir shopping or choose to travel on the FreeRide bus that goes up and down 16th Street. Catch a Denver Broncos game, enjoy a beer in lively McGregor Square and eat dinner in the many restaurants around Union Station.
Denver to Cheynne, 110 miles
Collect your motorhome and then begin your journey of the Wild West in Wyoming’s State Capital, Cheyenne. Stop by the Terry Bison Ranch, home to more than 2,300 grazing bison where you can hand feed the bison and visit the State Capitol Building and State Museum.
Cheyenne to Hot Springs, 240 miles
Head for the Black Hills of South Dakota. It may be a long drive, but it’s worth it as the Black Hills are home to some of the USA’s most iconic attractions, not to mention scenic byways with jaw dropping views around every corner, craggy rock formations and forested rolling hills. En-route to Hot Springs visit your first national park of your motorhome holiday, Wind Cave National Park which is known for its unique cave system and is home to some of the longest natural caves in the world. On arrival in Hot Springs, see the largest concentration of mammoth remains in the world at the Mammoth Site, still an active paleontological site.
Hot Springs to Mount Rushmore, 45 miles
A short drive today will lead you to a plethora of interesting attractions and cities including the ‘City of Presidents’ - Rapid City and Crazy Horse Memorial an enormous granite carving in production, honouring the Native American warrior. There's also the scenic Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road and unique rock formations in Custer State Park and one of the most universally known attractions of South Dakota – jaw dropping Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The 60ft high mountain carving of U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. If you have time take a drive out to witness a spectacular sunrise or sunset at Badlands National Park. The park’s 240,000 dramatic acres is filled with a maze of striking, jagged spires, buttes, canyons, and wildlife including, bison, prairie dogs and bighorn sheep.
Mount Rushmore to Devils Tower, 162 miles
Head west today into Wyoming, making a stop in historic Deadwood to catch a fun shootout re-enactment and to visit the saloons where legendary Wild Bill Hickock used to hang out. Take US Highway 14A through spectacular Spearfish Canyon, featuring windy roads, pretty waterfalls, and towering limestone cliffs and then Highway 24 via Hulett to Devils Tower, a sacred Native American site and huge butte that was the filming location of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Devils Tower to Medora, 250 miles
A morning on the road to divert up to Medora in North Dakota is well worth the drive. If it wasn’t for his time as a rancher in the state, Theodore Roosevelt would not have begun the process of creating the National Park Service. Visit the National Park rightly named after him, keeping an eye out for bison, wild horses, elk and golden eagles along the way. During the summer months don’t miss the toe tappin’ Medora Musical set against the magnificent North Dakota Badlands and the Pitchfork Fondue dinner. If visiting from July 2026 explore the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library that showcases the life and legacy of one of America’s most influential Presidents.
Medora to Sheridan, 338 miles
Drive across the plains of Montana before immersing yourself in some Native American history with a visit to the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn where General Custer famously lost his life. In Sheridan explore the historic Mint Bar, a popular local hangout with a classic western atmosphere and visit King’s Saddlery and Ropes a good place to buy western clothes and attire. Settle in at the nearby KOA campground just a 10 minutes’ drive from downtown.
Sheridan to Cody, 146 miles
A scenic drive awaits today as we continue through the spectacular Bighorn Mountains to Cody via Highway 14. Travel on the upper or lower loop of Highway 14 passing deep canyons, waterfalls, and incredible scenic lookouts. Stay overnight just on the outskirts of the character filled town of Cody, visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum of the West that tells the interesting story of the geology of Yellowstone National Park and the well-known character Buffalo Bill or catch the staged cowboy shoot-outs outside the Irma Hotel.
Cody to Yellowstone National Park, 205 miles
An exciting time is ahead as you drive to the magical landscape of Yellowstone National Park. From Cody, head north to Red Lodge to join the epic Beartooth Highway - it’s a stunning high mountain pass into the park. Dramatic waterfalls, bison traffic jams, geysers spouting hot air high up into the sky, colourful mud pools and wildlife including bears and wolves await! Drive the Upper Loop to the white rock formations of Mammoth Hot Springs and the thundering falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The park’s Lower Loop brings a riot of colour at Grand Prismatic Spring, the vibrant blue and green colourful mud pots near Lake Yellowstone and the impressive Old Faithful Geyser which erupts every 90 minutes. There are several campgrounds inside the park including Fishing Bridge RV Park, early booking is highly recommended!
Yellowstone National Park to Grand Teton National Park, 40 miles
Just a short drive from the South Entrance of Yellowstone National Park is Grand Teton National Park, which is dominated by the majestic Tetons, part of the famed Rocky Mountains. Drive the 42-mile scenic loop past beautiful glacier-fed Jenny Lake, get out of your vehicle and hike to nearby waterfalls, spot animals in the popular wildlife lookout of Oxbow Bend and along the Snake River. Overnight in the park, we recommend Colter Bay RV Park which is set on the shores of Jackson Lake, again early booking is recommended.
Grand Teton National Park to Pocatello, 180 miles
Leave Grand Teton National Park behind and take the short drive to the cosmopolitan, yet ‘western’ town of Jackson featuring wooden sidewalks, elk antler arches and great restaurants and shopping, and the popular Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. Continue along the dramatic Teton Pass to Pocatello in Idaho, which is surrounded by pretty mountain scenery and is just 30 minutes’ drive from the world famous Lava Hot Springs.
Pocatello to Twin Falls, 250 miles
Drive west to one of Idaho’s most famous attractions, Craters of the Moon National Monument, a 750,000-acre monument that encompasses an enormous lava field with endless volcanic features and caves. Walking on the extensive lava fields will feel like you’re walking on the moon. Continue south to Twin Falls, the gateway town to Snake River Canyon which the iconic daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump in the 1970’s. Make sure to visit spectacular Shoshone Falls, dubbed the ‘Niagara of the West’ which is taller than Niagara Falls at 212 feet tall.
Homeward bound
Head to Salt Lake City today maybe taking a pit stop at Antelope Island State Park to see its wildlife including bison and antelope before dropping off your motorhome and checking in for your return flight home.
