Fly to Spokane located in the west of Washington State. Pick up your hire car and drive to your hotel.
Spokane to Coeur d’Alene, 34 miles
Spend this morning exploring Spokane’s charming downtown and its pretty Riverfront Park home to Spokane Falls or drive out to the beautiful gardens in Manito Park. A short 40-minute drive will lead you to the state of Idaho and Coeur d’Alene which sits on the north edge of Lake Coeur D’Alene. Known for its stunning natural beauty the lake was formed as the glaciers of the last ice age was retreated and the surrounding pine forests are home to bald eagles, osprey and moose. Stay overnight in pretty Coeur d’Alene and hire a bike and cycle around the beautiful lake shore or take a lake cruise.
Coeur d’Alene to Lewiston, 116 miles
A wonderful drive beckons today as you continue north through the scarcely populated landscapes of western Idaho, where unspoilt wilderness is around every corner. Drive to Lewiston, the gateway town to Hells Canyon where a day of adventure on the water awaits. Choose to take a thrilling white-water rafting trip on one of the most popular stretches of the Salmon River. Go jet boating through the rapids of Hells Canyon which divides Oregon and Idaho and is the deepest river gorge in North America.
Lewiston to McCall, 198 miles
Drive south to Nez Perce National Historic Park which is made up of 38 sites in four states that are important to the culture of the Nimiipuu Tribe. Discover archaeological sites, interpretive trails and museum exhibits showcasing the tribes 10,000 years of history. Continue south to the town of McCall enjoying the mountain views, forest, lakes, and valleys. Enjoy exploring this laid-back mountain town, perhaps taking a swim in pretty Payette Lake, or enjoying the alpine views on a cruise. Or head into Ponderosa State Park for spectacular views across the lake from Osprey Cliffs Overlook.
McCall to Ketchum, 255 miles
Travel along the Payette River Scenic Byway and then turn inland to the pristine wilderness of the Sawtooth Mountains heading to Idaho City, the former state capital and a preserved mining community. Continue east through Boise National Forest to the pretty town of Stanley, perhaps stopping for a scenic hike and a dip in the hot springs. The outstanding natural beauty continues as you head south to Ketchum known for its mining and ranching and is where Ernest Hemmingway lived and is laid to rest. Surrounded by unspoilt wilderness, soak up the great outdoors, and the charming way of life in this mountain town.
Ketchum to Jackson, 239 miles
Head east to one of Idaho’s most famous attractions, Craters of the Moon National Monument, a 750,000-acre monument that encompasses an enormous lava field with endless volcanic features and caves. Navigate through the volcanic remains via a loop drive or by hiking the network of trails, caves and craters which will feel like you’re walking on the moon. Drive into Wyoming, via Idaho Falls where the Snake River flows through its downtown, perhaps stopping for lunch and then continue along the Teton Pass and its incredible mountain scenery to the delightful mountain town of Jackson. Stroll along the town’s wooden sidewalks, see elk antler arches and shops that range from the chic to the traditional. Toast the end of an epic day in true western style by saddling up at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.
Jackson to Yellowstone National Park, 60 miles
Visit your first national park on your fly-drive Grand Teton National Park which spans 310,000 acres of stunning landscapes, from lush valleys, and alpine lakes to the towering and dramatic Teton Mountains which form part of the famous Rocky Mountains. Iconic stops in the park include Mormon Row, Jenny Lake overlook and Schwabacher Landing which is the perfect spot to capture the beauty of the Teton Mountains. Enter Yellowstone National Park at the south entrance for two days of unforgettable scenery. The park covers two million acres of incomparable beauty, rugged wilderness, majestic peaks as well as the world’s largest concentration of geysers and thermal features. Marvel at the amazing geysers, bubbling mud pots and colourful springs, majestic waterfalls and lakes and sightings of herds of bison, elk, moose, and even grizzly bears. Enjoy two nights staying within the park, perhaps enjoying a guided wildlife tour or horseback riding.
Yellowstone National Park to Cody, 94 miles
Spend the morning exploring the park further before driving through the park’s east entrance to the character filled town of Cody which embraces the spirit of the wild west. The town was founded by Buffalo Bill Cody and highly recommended is a visit to the Buffalo Bill Museum of the West that tells the story of the areas’ history, culture and geology. Catch a staged cowboy shoot out outside the Irma Hotel and experience the excitement of the Cody Nite Rodeo, a nightly event held during the summer months showcasing thrilling rodeo action.
Cody to Sheridan, 147 miles
A scenic drive awaits today as your journey continues through the Bighorn Mountains to Sheridan. Take either the upper or lower loop of Highway 14 passing deep canyons, waterfalls and incredible scenic lookouts. In Sheridan explore the historic Mint Bar, a popular local hangout with a classic western atmosphere and visit King’s Saddlery and Ropes a good place to buy western clothes and attire.
Sheridan to Rapid City, 297 miles

Drive into South Dakota to Spearfish, the northernmost entrance to the Black Hills National Forest. The Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway is up next where towering limestone cliffs and rushing waters of Spearfish Creek will keep you company along with the three waterfalls that call Spearfish Canyon home. Step back in time in the gold rush town of Deadwood and walk the streets of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane and see a fun re-enactment of a shootout. Continue to Rapid City, your base for the next three nights. A plethora of interesting attractions are within easy reach of Rapid City including Crazy Horse Memorial, an enormous granite carving in production, honouring the Native American warrior, the scenic Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Rapid City to Medora, 235 miles
Today head to North Dakota and the cute cowboy town of Medora. Medora is the gateway to the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, named after the famous president who was responsible for creating America’s National Parks Service. Spend the day exploring the park’s pristine wilderness, keeping an eye out for bison, wild horses, and elk along the way. During the summer months don’t miss the toe tappin’ Medora Musical set against the magnificent North Dakota Badlands and the Pitchfork Fondue dinner. If visiting from July 2026 don’t miss the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library that showcases the life and legacy of one of America’s most influential Presidents.
Medora to Minot, 206 miles
Drive to the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Watford City which is the lesser known part of the park but still offers unrivalled rugged beauty. Don’t miss the iconic River Bend Overlook, one of the most iconic images of the park. Fargo is a thriving university town home to a bustling downtown and several attractions including the iconic Fargo Theatre, the Fargo Air Museum and the world-famous woodchipper from the movie named after the city. If you like a tipple, then don’t miss the local microbreweries.
Fargo to Sioux Falls
Cross the border back into South Dakota to stay in the small town of De Smet. Follow in the footsteps of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the television series Little House on the Prairie and explore the Ingalls Homestead and discover what life was like in 1862. Continue to Sioux Falls for two nights, a city full of character, with a great craft brewery and food scene. One of the city’s highlights is pretty Falls Park, a 128-acre park along the Big Sioux River with its own beautiful triple waterfall. With multiple museums you will be spoilt for choice on art, history, and culture in Sioux Falls. Follow the Sculpture Walk through downtown with over 80 sculptures on display.
Sioux Falls to Minneapolis, 237 miles
