Cheyenne to Mount Rushmore, 262 miles
Head for the Black Hills of South Dakota, home to some of the USA’s most iconic attractions, not to mention scenic byways with jaw dropping views around every corner, craggy rock formations, and forested rolling hills. Arrive at the jaw-dropping site of Mount Rushmore National Memorial – a 60ft high mountain carving of U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Other must-see attractions include Crazy Horse Memorial an enormous granite carving in production, honouring the Native American warrior and the unique rock formations and incredible scenic drives in Custer State Park. Stay two nights in your campground near to Mount Rushmore.
Mount Rushmore to Devils Tower, 162 miles
Drive west into Wyoming, making a stop in historic Deadwood to catch a fun shootout re-enactment and to visit the saloons where legendary Wild Bill Hickock used to hang out. Take US Highway 14A through spectacular Spearfish Canyon, featuring windy roads, pretty waterfalls, and towering limestone cliffs and then Highway 24 via Hulett to Devils Tower, a sacred Native American site and huge butte that was the filming location of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
