Arrive in Washington DC
Arrive in Washington DC and make your way by taxi or take the newly open Silver Line on the metro to downtown. Enjoy the next three days exploring America’s powerful capital city. Travel around the city on the efficient metro network or on a bus tour, bike or even on an electric scooter taking in the famous monuments of the White House, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and the Washington Monument. Not to be missed is the city’s amazing collection of museums many of which offer free entry including the National Air and Space Museum or the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Washington DC to Virginia Beach, 209 miles
Collect your car in downtown Washington and drive to Virginia Beach, perhaps stopping for lunch in the city of Richmond, and exploring its old waterfront houses and delightful museums. On arrival leave your car at the hotel and walk or cycle along the three-mile boardwalk which leads to museums and entertaining street performers, lay on the wide golden sand beaches or take a dolphin cruise.

Virginia Beach to Williamsburg, 60 miles
Take the short drive north to charming Williamsburg, part of the Historic Triangle that includes Jamestown and Yorktown. Stroll down the historic streets of Colonial Williamsburg, one of the most extensively restored 18th century towns in America, complete with working costumed interpreters, working tradespeople and historic taverns. Drive out to Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America and see its archaeological sites and living history exhibits or drive to nearby Yorktown where the American Revolution ended.

Williamsburg to Luray, 192 miles
Travel west today heading to Luray, located in the Shenandoah Valley, stopping in Charlottesville to visit Monticello, former President Thomas Jefferson’s home and time permitting either Jefferson or Blenheim Vineyards. Continue to Luray your base to explore Shenandoah National Park. Surrounded by spectacular scenery including the Blue Ridge Mountains, enjoy a day driving the pretty Skyland Drive stopping at the various lookout points along the way and Luray Caverns, the largest caverns on the east coast or take one of the many short hiking trails to experience some of the natural wonders in the park.

Luray to Frederick, 87 miles
Drive north to the charming town of Frederick located in the state of Maryland for your final night. A former colonial town, Frederick is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Known for its walkable historic downtown boasting cobblestone streets, preserved historic buildings, boutique shops and inviting restaurants, this quaint down is the picture-perfect ending to your Capital Region fly-drive.

Frederick to Washington DC – Homeward Bound
Drive back to Washington Dulles International Airport, perhaps stopping at the nearby Steven F. Hazy Centre, the sister attraction to the National Air and Space Museum located in downtown Washington DC. The centre is home to over 200 different aircraft that are housed in two large hangers including aircraft used in World War II, a legendary Air France Concorde and the Space Shuttle Discovery.
