Continue on your overnight train journey through Northern California and Oregon, hopefully catching a glimpse of Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainer as you end in Seattle to join your unforgettable Alaska Cruise with Holland America.

Your day-to-day plan
Day 1-3
Arrive Los Angeles
Fly to the exciting city of Los Angeles which is surrounded by wide sandy beaches, deserts and mountains. We’ve included a two day hop on/off bus tour during your three night stay that visits world famous Rodeo Drive, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the famous pier at Santa Monica. For a fun-filled day head to the magic of Disneyland in Anaheim or the thrilling rides at Universal Studios.
Day 4-6
Amtrak - Coast Starlight to San Francisco
Depart Los Angeles Union Station and travel north up to San Francisco for your train journey and arguably the most spectacular. Hug the Pacific coastline for the first part of your journey past Malibu, Santa Barbara, and Pismo Beach, before turning inland through the fertile lands, rolling hills and the vineyards of Santa Ynez Valley. As your train starts to get nearer to San Francisco pass San Jose, known as the capital of Silicon Valley. Your journey includes coach class seats which offer plenty of leg room, access to the observation car with large picture windows, access to the café or the lounge car which serves a sit-down lunch. Arrive in Emeryville late evening and transfer on your own by taxi or Uber to downtown San Francisco which takes approximately 30 minutes. Enjoy the next two days exploring the beautiful ‘City by the Bay’ on your included two day hop on/off bus tour that also includes a visit to the notorious prison Alcatraz.
Day 7
Amtrak - Coast Starlight to Seattle
Enjoy some further sightseeing in San Francisco, perhaps hiring a bike and cycling over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, before joining your train at Emeryville Station for the overnight train journey into Northern California through California’s Gold Country and into Oregon to Klamath Falls and Portland before arriving in to Seattle late evening the following day. Your accommodation onboard the train is staying in a roomette which has seats by day that convert to upper and lower berths by night which have access to shared shower and toilet facilities.
Day 8-9
Amtrak - Coast Starlight to Seattle
Arrive at Seattle's King Street Station and transfer by taxi to your downtown hotel. Seattle has the dramatic backdrop of the Cascade Mountains and has a sparkling waterfront overlooking the islands of beautiful Puget Sound. The city is very walkable with must-see attractions including the iconic Space Needle which has 360-degree views of the city and mountains and the Victorian buildings and museums in Pioneer Square, the city’s oldest neighbourhood. Other highlights include the sights and smells of lively Pike Place Market and Chihuly Garden and Glass and its display of colourful glass blown sculptures and beautiful landscaped gardens.
Day 10
Holland America Line
Depart Seattle in the afternoon and revel in the excitement as you board your cruise ship bound for Alaska. Sail through the picturesque scenery of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands where you may see whales. Continue north to the shoreline of mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island on your journey towards this iconic destination and the wonderful ports of call.

Day 11
At Sea
With Holland America’s Explorations Central program, you can immerse yourself in the destination by joining one of the dynamic and informative talks on subjects that include the history of the region, and Alaska’s iconic whales.
Day 12
Stephens Passage & Juneau
Today is spent cruising Stephens Passage as you head towards your first port of call in Alaska - Juneau. A trip on the Mount Roberts Tramway is highly recommended. There are several trails at the top of the mountain with spectacular views of the harbour below.
Day 13
Glacier Bay & Icy Strait Point
Simply jaw-dropping! With jagged mountains, rainforests and fjords, Glacier Bay is a highlight of your Alaska Cruise. Home to numerous wildlife species and exceptionally beautiful scenery, you will spend time cruising through the bay, with time to admire the views and spot wildlife along the way, before heading to Icy Strait Point.
Day 14
Sitka
Today you will spend time in Sitka, and there are many onshore excursions that you can pre-book including some attractions that have a Russian influence. Stroll past the onion dome of St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Russian Bishop’s House, both National Historic Landmarks. Surrounded by the Tongass National rain forest, nature abounds in Sitka, Alaska. A walk up Castle Hill offers the ideal vantage point to take in Mount Edgecumbe, a dormant volcano. Visits to the Fortress of the Bear and Alaska Raptor Center are in order for any animal-lover. Both provide the opportunity to see Alaska wildlife, such as bears or raptors up-close, but safely.
Day 15
Ketchikan
With a strong Native Alaskan culture and fishing industry, Ketchikan is well worth a visit. Ketchikan has long been an important hub of the salmon-fishing and -packing industries. Visitors can try their luck on a sportfishing or simply savour the fresh seafood. Ketchikan is also one of the best spots along the Inside Passage to explore the rich cultural sights of Native Alaskan nations like the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. You can see intricately carved totem poles at the Totem Heritage Centre and Totem Bight State Park, while the attractions of Saxman Village just outside of Ketchikan offers the chance to see Tlingit culture in action.
Day 16
Victoria
This evening your port of call is Victoria, the beautiful provincial capital of British Columbia. Spend some time walking down the harbourfront area and the Parliament Buildings and enjoy the Canadian hospitality, before embarking for your final journey to Seattle.
Day 17
Homeward Bound
Your rail and cruise adventure ends in Seattle this morning. Disembark your cruise and after some last minute shopping and sightseeing, transfer independently to Seattle airport for your flight home.
